The book of 1 John is written to give believers certainty that they can know they have eternal life (5:13). Evidence of this eternal life is seen by walking in light and loving others. However, some of John’s audience thought they could live how they wanted and not love others, but still be good with God. John says these people are only deceiving themselves and do not have the truth.

John writes his book to encourage his readers not to sin (2:1a). As we think about our past and current relationships, we often have responded in sinful ways, words, and thoughts. We may have made impure choices or have regrets. What is the way forward? Today’s additional resources deal with dating and purity regrets.

While writing to give encouragement not to sin, John’s letter recognizes that his listeners probably will sin (2:1b). So with this challenge to not sin but the probability they will, John points them to Christ (1:9, 2:1). Today is a new day. We can confess our sins, turn from them, be forgiven, and walk in light to please God. May 1 John be an encouragement with past relationship regrets and moving forward to please God.

  • Do you feel hindered by any past regrets or mistakes?

Reflect:

  • What is the promise given in 1 John 1:9? How can you apply that truth today?

  • What verse from today’s reading most resonates and stands out to you?
