Say the name out loud to yourself. Not another name, not another statistic, not another news story. He is a man, made in the image of God. Church, rise up—silence is not an option. God has commissioned us to represent him in the face of injustice. Speak out. Lord, we cry for you to intervene. Help us!
Consider for a moment: putting your knee on the neck of a man who is pleading, telling you he can’t breathe, is not just injustice; it is stomach-turning, heart-sickening murder. It doesn’t matter what his record was, what he did, or if he resisted. Suspects are restrained all the time without injury or death.
What is in your heart if you use your body weight to suffocate a man while he is pleading for his life? And what is in your heart if seeing it doesn’t produce moral grief and outrage in you?
